1-4. Former Eight Faculties and the Faculty of General Education

Japanese

When it was reborn as Kanazawa University in 1949, it had six faculties. These are the faculties of Letters and Law, Education, Science, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Engineering. Kanazawa University, which started by adding the Faculty of General Education, added the School of Allied Medical Professions in 1974. The Faculty of Engineering, Medicine, and the School of Allied Medical Professions each had separate campuses on the Kodatsuno Ridge, but when they were in the Faculty of General Education, students attended the campus within the castle.

This system underwent a major change in the 1980s. This is because the Faculty of Letters and Law was split into three faculties: the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Economics, bringing the total to eight faculties. In the same year, the Board Trustee decided to relocate to Kakuma. In 1989, as part of the first phase of general relocation, the Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and the University Library were relocated to the Kakuma Campus. This system continued until all students graduated, even after the college and school system was established in 2008.

Here, they have been ordered as Letters, Law, and Economics. This is the order that was often used in documents from Kanazawa University. However, for reasons of convenience in structuring classes, the Faculty of General Education had classes which were arranged in the order of the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, and Faculty of Letters. The Faculty of General Education lasted for a year and a half, and if students failed even one of the required credits they were not allowed to advance to the undergraduate program, so they had to remain in the Faculty of General Education. The Faculty of General Education and the Faculty of Science were located on the west side of Shinmaru Plaza in the current Kanazawa Castle Park, and the Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Economics were located in Ninomaru Plaza. The Faculty of Education was located around Sannomaru Plaza. In other words, there was a difference in altitude between the Faculty of General Education and the Faculties of Letters, Law, Economics, and Education, and between them were two moats, stone walls, and facilities such as the cafeteria, making it clear how difficult it would be for a student in the Faculty of General Education to become an undergraduate student. Even after some of the faculties were relocated to Kakuma, the Faculty of General Education remained on the castle campus until the autumn of 1993, maintaining the image of a castle university. The Faculty of General Education had many unique professors and many famous classes. Each faculty was internally divided into a number of departments where specialized education was provided. Needless to say, this has resulted in many outstanding research results.

In this way, the system of the former eight faculties and the Faculty of General Education formed the basis for today’s system of colleges and common education, and retains its image.
